Politicians have only as much power as the people choose to give them. Empower your politicians with the knowledge of issues that are important to you. Write a letter letting them know what they need to do to protect Burns Bog.
The most current issues relating to Burns Bog are:
- The South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR)
- UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the bog
- The GVRD Management Plan
South Fraser Perimeter Road
The South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR), one of the many Gateway Program projects, is a billion dollar freeway running along the south side of the Fraser River from Deltaport Way in Southwest Delta to 176th Street (Hwy 15) in Surrey. Click here to view a map of the route.
This freeway will run along the edges of Burns Bog, disrupting the natural hydrology and hydrochemistry, and destroying and fragmenting wildlife and their habitat.
This freeway is not needed and can still be stopped.
Send a letter to your local member of Parliament (it’s postage free) and your local M.L.A. Let them know that you want them to consider alternate routes.
Write your own thoughts or click here to download a letter template you can simply sign your name to.
To read about the better alternative plan put forward and subsequently dismissed, visit the website by Greg Hoover at www.thereisanotherway.com
Check out www.gatewaysucks.org for up to date notices on meetings and events relating to the South Fraser Perimeter Road.
UNESCO World Heritage Site designation
The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) exists to protect sites of outstanding value to humanity. Every year approximately thirty World Heritage Sites are designated.
For more information please visit http://whc.unesco.org
Help get better protection of Burns Bog by raising its profile with a wider global community through this designation. Write a letter to your government representatives telling them you support UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for Burns Bog.
GVRD Burns Bog Management Plan
Watch the GVRD website at www.gvrd.bc.ca for updates on the Burns Bog Management Plan. Request a copy of the latest GVRD Parks update. Let your local politicians know how you feel about the proposed lack of public education, public facilities and public access to Burns Bog. We support controlled access, education and an interpretive centre.
What is your opinion? Let us and the politicians know how you feel.
