President’s Message, December 2008

Time seems to slow down and speed up at the same as the end of the year draws close.

My desk is still covered with papers but the boardroom looks better than ever thanks to the organizing of a great volunteer. I don’t know what we would do without our volunteers. They do so much for us. Our volunteers are involved with every aspect of the Society’s work.

We do more than just save the world, one bog at a time: we provide meaningful work for our volunteers.

Becky just gave a field trip to a group of young people from Katimavik. The trail was flooded so they took off their shoes and walked through the water!

One young person said, “This is one trip we won’t forget.” Another thanked Becky after the tour. She said it was interesting and not boring like some of the others they had been on. Needless to say, Becky was thrilled when she told me.

This is also the time of year that we try and find something different for that special person who has everything. Give us a call, make a donation of $25 or more and we will send a special certificate of recognition on your behalf to that special person. We will send a card with your name so that they know who was thinking of them.

A few months ago, we sent a certificate to a newly married couple from one of their friends. A few days ago, I go an email saying how much it was appreciated. Nowadays people marrying usually have everything they need so something recognizing their “special day” that doesn’t require dusting, polishing or watering is appreciated.

We are still accepting nominations for Celebrating Women and the Spirit of the Cranes. The deadline is rapidly approaching so please get them in as soon as possible.

Another gift that might be appreciated are tickets to Celebrating Women & the Spirit of the Cranes. They are $65 and $55 for seniors/students. We hear great things about the Pacific Inn Resort and Conference Centre in White Rock. We are looking forward to our Gala March 21, 2009 and to seeing you there.

After Christmas, think about regifting some of the things you received. We would be delighted to have them for our Silent Auction or the Balloon Sales.

This is the time of year when we pause and think how lucky we are to have such wonderful supporters. A group of young people at Semiahmoo Secondary, Surrey, picked up garbage and did general cleanup in the nearby parks. They donated part of the money they earned to the Society. Thank you.

One of our supporters brings in treats every summer for our volunteers. They really appreciate the treats. A few weeks ago, another person brought in some paper.

I am waiting for a new batch of white binders from another. He had been saving a box for me along with some metal shelves. Then he went away for his holidays and came back to find them trashed and in the garbage! Every time he mentioned what happened, I could see him getting upset.

There are so many of you who support us with your cheque book that I am afraid that if I start mentioning you by name I will forget someone. Please be assured that each and every gift is deeply appreciated. Without your support there would be no library for research, no field trips for students, no educational material for teachers and NO BOG for future generations.

All the best to you and yours for the coming year. If you are nearby, do drop in and say, “hello.”

Sincerely,

Eliza Olson
President

P.S. If you live near the office and you would like something more tangible, drop in and look at the artwork and other items we have for sale. We are open Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Happy holidays.
