Field Trips
Bring your class on a journey through the Delta Nature Reserve!
Guided by a knowledgeable member of our Education Team, uncover the history of Burns Bog and why it is one of the most important ecosystems in the Lower Mainland. Through inquiry and discussion, students will learn about the 3 main characteristics of a bog, how various species have adapted to the bog, and where the infamous sunken tractor really came from.
Guides demonstrate how to collect and distinguish between local native and invasive plants. Students will learn about rare and endangered species, unique adaptations Bog organisms need to survive, about the different ecosystems in the Delta Nature Reserve, and more!

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a Field Trip?
Field Trips take around 2-2.5 hours. However, we do take grade level and weather into consideration when delivering tours, so this timeframe is somewhat flexible.
How can I prepare my class for the Field Trip?
Please review our behaviour guidelines with your class prior to visiting Burns Bog. These guidelines, as well as a “What to Bring” checklist, are included in the Welcome Package that is distributed following registration.
How do you make sure your tours are appropriate for each age group?
Our staff are familiar with the Core Competencies for each grade level, and take into consideration the age group that will be coming on the tour. We adapt each tour to suit the needs of each class.

My class is discussing a specific topic as part of our curriculum - can this be included?
Yes! There is space on the Field Trip booking form to indicate any particular interests, specific topics, or the general concepts your class is covering that can help us tailor your tour to you.
I still have questions - who can I contact?
Please contact the Education Coordinator at 604-572-0373 or education@burnsbog.org.
How far will students be walking?
The whole loop (to and from the parking lot) is about 4.5 km of walking. Depending on the ability level of the group, we can shorten this to about 3 km by doubling back on the boardwalk.
Is there somewhere to have lunch or eat a snack?
Unfortunately, we do not have a designated seating place for lunch. While food is not permitted on the boardwalks within the Delta Nature Reserve, students are welcome to eat their lunch on the gravel and paved trails that link Planet Ice and the Delta Nature Reserve. Given the space, a hand-held lunch is recommended for convenience.
Can’t we eat during the tour?
We generally don’t allow guests to eat during tours. Little crumbs or food that gets dropped on the ground can have a significant impact on the plants and animals in the Bog. There are no garbage cans along the boardwalks, so we want to make sure there is no garbage being brought into the Nature Reserve.
Are there bathrooms available?
Bathrooms are available before and after the tour inside Planet Ice. There are no toilets in the Nature Reserve. Please arrive early for your tour to allow students time to use the bathroom.
What about first aid?
Our staff are trained in First Aid, and bring a First Aid Kit on every tour.
Are students required to complete/bring Release Forms?
Completed Consent, Release, and Acknowledgement of Risk Forms are required for participation in all Burns Bog Field Trips. Forms are included in the 2023 Welcome Package that is distributed following registration.
I can’t find the Release Form - what should I do?
Download another copy here. Don’t forget to bring the completed version on the Field Trip!
