In-Class Workshops

Can't come to Burns Bog? We'll come to you!

Interactive workshops include the history of Burns Bog, as well as the valuable resources and services it provides to humans and animals alike. Your class will also learn about some of the threats Burns Bog has faced over time, and how they can get more involved to protect important green spaces in their community.

Guided by discussion and visual aids, students will get up-close and hands-on with real plant samples from Burns Bog, as well as replica teeth, claws, skulls, and bones. Students will learn about many of the Bog’s unique species, as well as some of the adaptations they require to survive in their respective ecosystems.

We regret to inform you that all workshops are postponed until further notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is each Workshop?

Workshops are approximately 90 minutes long. We take grade level and teacher requests into consideration when delivering presentations.

Are the Workshops interactive? Will you be bringing in any props from the Bog?

Yes! We have hands-on demonstrations, activities and examples from the Bog. We will bring some plant, water, and soil samples to share with your students, as well as replica skulls, bones, teeth, and claws. Things can get a little messy sometimes, so prepare your students to get their hands dirty. Students will also need something to write or draw with, a willingness to participate, and good listening skills.

How do you make sure your Workshops are appropriate for each age group?

Our staff are familiar with the most recent Core Competencies for each grade level, and take into consideration the age group being presented to. We adapt each Workshop to suit the needs of each class.

I still have questions - who can I contact?

Please contact the Programs Manager at 604-572-0373 or e-mail programs@burnsbog.org

How do I get my classroom ready for you?

Workshops work best when students are separated into desk groups of 4 or 5. Our presentations require the use of a projector and screen. Access to a laptop is preferred. We also need an extra table at the front of the room for workshop materials and handouts.

Can my school book more than one Workshop for the same day?

Yes! We are able to accommodate morning and afternoon presentations at the same school, as long as we have availability in our booking system.

Can you present to 2 classes at once?

No. Our workshops are most effective when presented to a maximum of 30 students at a time. We have prepared activities or demonstrations that require smaller groups. We find that students have the best learning experience in group sizes of 30 or less. Presenters are also best able to divide their attention and enthusiasm amongst a class-sized group of students.

My class is discussing a specific topic as part of our curriculum - can this be included?

Yes! There is space on the Workshop booking form to indicate any particular interests, specific topics, or the general concepts your class is covering that can help us tailor your tour to you.
